Introducing IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist Training
BER is proud to announce a new training opportunity: IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist. This is the first comprehensive code training available. While it is geared towards preparing HERS Raters for the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner exam, this deep dive into the content of the International Energy Conservation Code is a great opportunity for anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of energy codes. The focus is on the 2018 IECC, but students will also learn about the history of energy codes, highlights of previous versions, and get a preview of the 2021 IECC.
About the IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist Designation
The IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist designation is a joint effort by RESNET and ICC. It leverages the skills you already possess as a certified HERS Rater, construction expert, or energy professional. This designation will allow you to expand your business by working with code officials to supplement the work of jurisdictions facing resource constraints that affect their ability to conduct the necessary reviews.
What do I need to become an IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist?
- Hold a current RESNET/HERS Rater or Rating Field Inspector (RFI) certification
- Obtain the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner certification by passing the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner - 79 Exam
About this Training
Do I have to take a prep-course to register for the exam?
While a training prep course is not required to register for, and take, the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner - 79 test, enrolling in this training will significantly improve your exam readiness and increase your likelihood of success!
What are the benefits of taking in this course?
While this course is aimed at preparing industry professionals, specifically HERS Raters and RFIs, for the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner exam, it is also a great opportunity to enhance your knowledge of energy codes and earn Professional Development (PDH) credits!

I’ve completed the training... Now what?
After you finish the course and are ready to tackle the exam, the next step is to sign up for the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner - 79 exam. Registration must be done directly with ICC, along with the examination fee of $295. Upon passing the exam, you will be automatically qualified for the IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist designation. Simply submit your RTIN or RFIIN to ICC to obtain your designation.
What if I’m not a HERS Professional? Can I still get this designation?
Although the IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist designation is exclusively available for RESNET/HERS Raters and RFIs, don't let that stop you! Non-HERS affiliated professionals who pass the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner - 79 exam can earn the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner certification.
