ENERGY STAR version 3 training for Raters is now being offered as an online training. Please follow the links below to register now.
All Raters who plan to provide verification services for ENERGY STAR version 3 homes must receive training by an Accredited ENERGY STAR version 3 Training Provider.
The timeline for the transition to ENERGY STAR v3 is given below. Raters who intend to provide verification for ENERGY STAR projects after 1/01/12 must take the ENERGY STAR v3 Rater training before then.

As a benefit to the greater Rater community, we will be offering two options to receive the ENERGY STAR v3 training:
Giving Raters a choice on how to receive the ENERGY STAR v3 training is crucial, as the training is mandatory for all Raters who desire to provide verification services for ENERGY STAR version 3. For a great deal of Raters, the mandate to comply with the ENERGY STAR v3 training requirement means that they will have to take time off of their busy schedules to attend. For most of us, missing work for a training is just not an option.
For Raters who do not want to take time off of work to sit in a classroom, and who do not want to have deal with paying travel/hotel costs, The BER strongly encourages taking the online version of the ENERGY STAR v3 training, as it will allow Raters to take the training when it is most convenient for them from the comfort of their home or office.
The BER will be offering the online version of the ENERGY STAR v3 training in six easy to digest 2-hour long modules which may all be taken within the span of a week, or may be taken at the Rater's convenience over a longer period of time.
The BER is also including bonus training material for the online version of the ENERGY STAR v3 training. This bonus material will include an overview of the HVAC Contractor Checklist and the EPA's Indoor airPLUS program. The BER knows that Raters who complete the ENERGY STAR v3 training want to be more familiar with the HVAC Contractor Checklist, as well as the HVAC Rater Checklist. Since the new Water Management Checklist incorporates many facets of the Indoor airPLUS Checklist, we are also including bonus training so that Raters will know how to verify the requirements of this program once they complete the online ENERGY STAR v3 training.
For Raters who are not comfortable with receiving ENERGY STAR v3 training online, The BER will also be hosting a select number of ENERGY STAR v3 training around the country.
ENERGY STAR v3 marks a new era in energy performance and quality for the new home construction industry. With ENERGY STAR version 3, homes must go beyond the energy performance metrics specified in the latest version of the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. ENERGY STAR v3 also includes many criterion that are directed at making homes more comfortable, safe and durable, making the new version of ENERGY STAR the most comprehensive building science program to date.
Here are some of the many benefits of completing The BER's ENERGY STAR v3 online training:
1. First, and most importantly, it is convenient. You can take the ENERGY STAR v3 online training sessions from home, eliminating travel expenses and lost time at work or with your family. Once the training is paid for, Raters will have the ability to take ENERGY STAR version 3 online training modules either all within a 1-week period, or over the course of the upcoming months before ENERGY STAR v3 training becomes mandatory.
2. Second, we offer bonus ENERGY STAR v3 training material no one else does in the form of an integrated Indoor airPLUS/Water Management Checklist training, and the HVAC Contractor Checklist training, which we are not required to train Raters, but believe it is the right thing to do.
3. Third, our ENERGY STAR v3 online training utilizes the expertise of multiple industry professionals, such as Eurihea Speciale (16 years operating a successful construction company, 3 years as a RESNET QAD and HERS Provider manager), Chris McTaggart (3 years as QADD and home performance assessment professional), Ed Voytovich (25 years as a home remodeler and home performance consultant), and Joe Ludy (HVAC and home performance professional and industry expert on HVAC and home performance testing and consulting).
4. Fourth, once you take our ENERGY STAR v3 online training, you can come back as many times as you wish as an auditor and watch the presentation again. With two day classroom training, it’s a one-time shot to learn and try to retain all that information all in two days.
5. Lastly, the price is right! The cost for all six modules and the exam is only $400. Individual modules are also available for $75. BER Rater members will receive a $50 discount.* There is no charge to come back and take the individual sessions again after you have registered by following the link below.
