Becoming a Certified RESNET HERS Rater: Paths to Certification

As detailed on our Why Become a Certified HERS Rater? page, Certified RESNET Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Raters are qualified professionals who offer a variety of valuable services to their clients.

For professionals looking to become a Certified HERS Rater, Building Efficiency Resources is proud to offer multiple paths to becoming Certified.

Traditional Path to Certification

Step 1: Attend a 5-8 day RESNET Rater classroom training. During the course, the rater trainee will learn about the energy efficient construction industry, building science, RESNET Standards, diagnostic testing, and computer energy modeling. Upon completion of the course, the Rater must successfully pass the RESNET National Rater Exam, as well as complete two supervised training ratings.

BER is currently offering classroom training for becoming a Certified Rater now. Visit our training page to see upcoming training opportunities.

Step 2: After successful completion of the RESNET training course, the prospective rater must join a Provider in order to be mentored through three provisional ratings. The provisional Rater shall complete these ratings under the supervision and direction of the Provider. Upon successful completion of all three provisional ratings, and any other requirements outlined by the Provider, the individual will become a Certified Rater and will be eligible to join a Provider.

BER offers provisional Rater mentorship for clients who successfully pass our Rater Training, or who have passed their training elsewhere. The benefit of working with The BER for your provisional Rater mentorship is that we are dedicated to giving our provisional Raters the best education possible, so that they will be ready to work with clients upon completing their certification. To ensure that our you are fully trained, we combine a rigorous education in using REM/Rate energy modeling software with actual hands-on field mentorship, so we’re confident in your abilities to succeed, and so are you.

Step 3: After completing the provisional Rater mentorship and becoming a Certified HERS Rater, the Rater then pays their annual dues to their Provider so that they may begin submitting Confirmed HERS ratings to the Provider for QA and so that they may produce reports for their builder or homeowner clients.

BER is excited to work with any Rater who has completed their certification and is interested in joining our Provider. To learn more about the benefits of working with The BER, visit our Provider page.

Alternative Route to Certification

For some professionals, the cost and time out of work of following the traditional route to certification is not feasible. Additionally, some professionals already have significant experience working in the residential energy efficiency field, and therefore may not need the same degree of classroom training to prepare to pass the RESNET National Rater Exam. To meet the needs of this unique type of student, BER has created an alternative route to certification.

Through our alternative certification package, we offer prospective raters the ability to skip attending the classroom training, and instead to take a self-study approach to prepare for the RESNET National Rater exam. The BER provides training materials and support through this process, and upon successful completion of the exam, the rater candidate must perform two training ratings and three provisional ratings to become Certified. Although this approach to certification is not for everyone, it can be significantly less expensive, as forgoing attending the training allows a rater candidate to avoid most of the cost associated with travel, lodging, food, and the actual cost of the training itself.

Although BER ultimately has the discretion to decide whether a candidate is a good fit for this alternative path to becoming a Certified HERS Rater, we are willing to discuss the option with any candidate who is interested. For more information about our alternative certification package, contact us so that we can discuss this opportunity.
